Marumo Gallants FC claimed their first ever victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, winning 7-6 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes of football.

What happened?

The match was played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday. Sundowns had 70 per cent possession in the first half but could not manage a shot on target. Marumo Gallants FC had debutants of their own, 19-year-old Ivorian Agnikoi Eroine and his countryman Ibrahim Bancé, who both played their first game for the team.

Key moments

Tashreeq Matthews started hot for Sundowns, squaring himself and shooting from just beyond the area in the 11th minute, but he could not find the target. Aubrey Modiba’s cross at the byline in the 17th minute caused chaos in the Marumo Gallants FC box. The ball eventually fell for Nuno Santos, whose shot was blocked by a wall of Marumo Gallants FC defenders.

Penalty shootout

The game went to extra time, and with neither side able to break the deadlock, the match was decided by a penalty shootout. Marumo Gallants FC won the shootout 7-6, claiming their first ever victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.
