Ronnie Kanalelo has begun work as Marumo Gallants FC's new head coach amid a public dispute with his former club. The Namibian side African Stars suggested his move could be a breach of contract, a claim Kanalelo has firmly rejected.
Kanalelo was officially announced by the Betway Premiership club on Monday and was present at training that morning. His appointment comes with Marumo Gallants sitting 16th in the league, having taken just two points from their opening six matches. Their recent form shows one draw and four defeats, the latest a 1-0 loss to Amazulu last week.
African Stars chairman Salomo Hei indicated the club was seeking advice on the situation, as they had expected Kanalelo to lead them in an upcoming CAF Champions League tie against Orlando Pirates. Kanalelo responded directly via social media, challenging Hei to address him personally.
"I believe Solomo should come forward and tell me what issues he has with me," Kanalelo said. "If you have the courage, please approach me and clear the air. I'm truly tired of your inflated ego."
The new Gallants boss stated his agreement with the Namibian club contained a specific clause relating to international opportunities. He argued this provision legitimised his move to South Africa's top flight.
"Lastly, my contract clearly states that African Stars will not obstruct me when an international coaching opportunity arises," Kanalelo said. He added that contractual matters were now handled by another official at the club, suggesting Hei was not fully informed.
Kanalelo's immediate task is to improve results for a team that has conceded 11 goals while scoring only five this season. Supporters can check the team's upcoming schedule on the club's fixtures page and view the current standings. His first match in charge will be a key opportunity to start climbing away from the relegation zone.
