Marumo Gallants FC have named Ronny Kananelo as their new head coach for the rest of the Betway Premiership season. The club announced the decision on Tuesday, bringing in the seasoned manager to tackle a challenging beginning to the term that has left them near the bottom of the Premier Soccer League standings with very few points from their opening games.
Kananelo, a holder of a top CAF coaching qualification, offers extensive experience from various roles in Southern Africa. He formerly played as a goalkeeper for Mamelodi Sundowns, securing multiple league championships, and represented Namibia internationally, playing in a past Africa Cup of Nations. His managerial background includes positions at several clubs such as UNAM FC, Black Africa FC, Bucks Buccaneers FC, African Stars FC, Maritzburg United, and Bloemfontein Celtic. He has also been part of the technical setup for Namibia's national side during several Africa Cup of Nations competitions.
His main task will be to stop a sequence of unfavorable outcomes. The side's recent form shows a string of losses and draws, including a narrow loss to Amazulu. They have let in many more goals than they have scored so far this campaign, placing them far adrift of the table's top team.
While the club has not issued a formal announcement explaining the choice, media outlet EWN reported the confirmation of Kananelo's hiring for the season's duration. A key past accomplishment involved leading African Stars FC to an advanced stage in the CAF Champions League qualifiers.
Kananelo's debut game leading the team will be a tough encounter with Orlando Pirates. The incoming coach must rapidly evaluate his players and devise a plan to enhance performances, beginning with that match. The squad's leading goal contributor this term has managed a couple of goals, a record the new coach will aim to improve.
